One night, a 48-year-old man undergoes a truly odd experience. He awakens in a strange world, where he is able to discuss theology with such entities as a Scotsman and an Englishman, meant to be the well-known Christian theologians George MacDonald and C.S. Lewis. During his time in this alternate world, the man explores his faith and beliefs and comes to some conclusions about the direction his life is taking. When he awakens, he begins his life anew.
Phillips (Wild Grows the Heather in Devon, Bethany, 1998) brings off this unexpected premise surprisingly well. Although the theological issues are sure to cause controversy with some readers, Christian book discussion groups should find this a wonderful starting point for some great debate.
